Celebrating Canada’s Royal Conservatory with Peter Oundjian and Stewart Goodyear

Recognized as a masterful and dynamic presence in the conducting world, Peter Oundjian has developed a multi-faceted portfolio as a conductor, violinist, professor, and artistic advisor. He has been celebrated for his musicality, an eye towards collaboration, innovative programming, leadership, and training with students and an engaging personality. Now carrying the title Conductor Emeritus, Oundjian’s 14-year tenure as Music Director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra served as a major creative force for the city of Toronto and was marked by a reimagining of the TSO’s programming, international stature, audience development, touring, and a number of outstanding recordings, garnering a Grammy Award nomination in 2018 and a JUNO Award for Vaughan Williams’s Orchestral Works in 2019. Oundjian is Principal Conductor of the Colorado Symphony in addition to Music Director of the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder. He has been a visiting professor at Yale University’s School of Music since 1981, and in 2013 was awarded the school’s Sanford Medal for Distinguished Service to Music. A dedicated educator, Oundjian regularly conducts the Yale, Juilliard, Curtis and New World symphony orchestras. Peter Oundjian was named an Honorary Fellow of The Royal Conservatory of Music – the RCM’s highest designation and given to individuals who have made extraordinary cultural contributions across Canada and around the world. 

Proclaimed "a phenomenon" by the Los Angeles Times and "one of the best pianists of his generation" by the Philadelphia Inquirer, RCM alumnus Stewart Goodyear is an accomplished concert pianist, improviser, and composer. He has performed with major orchestras from around the world, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, among many others. Mr. Goodyear is The Royal Conservatory’s inaugural Artist-in-Residence – a role which is integrated into all aspects of The Royal Conservatory’s efforts and mission to develop human potential. In addition to annual performances at the Conservatory’s acclaimed Koerner Hall and delivering content for the RCM Certificate Program, Mr. Goodyear conducts masterclasses at the RCM’s professional training schools – The Glenn Gould School and The Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists. 

Comprised of artists from the Temerty Orchestral Program at The Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School, the Royal Conservatory Orchestra is considered one of the finest training ensembles in North America. The Glenn Gould School (GGS) was named after The Royal Conservatory’s beloved alumnus of to honour his ideals of excellence and innovation in music performance and is now known as one of the finest post-secondary institutions in North America focused on music performance training. GGS offers three programs of study (Orchestra, Piano, Voice) at three levels of study (Undergraduate, Post-Bachelor and Post-Graduate).
