Vivian Liu

Teacher ARCT
Vivian has been teaching the piano and violin to students of all grades for over 10 years, from preparatory to post-ARCT. Her students have received RCM gold medals in the piano and violin, performed in gala concerts including the Kiwanis, and have been involved in chamber music and youth orchestras in the community. Vivian enjoys witnessing each student’s growth as they fulfill their goals. She believes the most important factor in the learning process is that students are engaged and look forward to lessons, having a lifelong appreciation for music. Vivian holds RCM ARCTs in piano and violin performance (2011,2012), and graduated with her bachelors. Born and raised in greater Vancouver, Vivian started her musical training at the age of 4 learning the piano and violin. In 2007, she competed in the Canadian Music Competition, winning first place for piano and third place for violin in her age category. Vivian made her first debut with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in March 2010, performing the third movement of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto under the baton of Maestro Bramwell Tovey at the Orpheum. Her past soloist appearances with the VSO include July 2010 Deer Lake’s Symphony in the Park under conductor Evan Mitchell, and the Orpheum’s 2013 School Concert Series under conductor Gordon Gerrard. In 2012, Vivian received the RCM Grade 10 Violin BC & Yukon Regional Gold Medal. In 2013, she was publicly awarded the RCM ARCT Violin national gold medal by the Royal Conservatory for scoring the highest mark in the country on her exam. In the same year her chamber music group won the Friends of Chamber Music competition. Vivian utilizes a combination of technique, ear training, and repertoire in her teaching methodology. As a past young learner, she explains musical concepts in a way that makes sense to her students as they progress through different developmental stages.
