I am new to Toronto, having recently moved back to Canada after living in NYC for almost 20 years. I have performed at Carnegie Hall and on other international stages, completed most of my studies abroad, and work with world-class musicians. Still teaching will always be a core aspect to my work as a musician.
As a teacher, I heartily embraced the introduction of the Royal Conservatory of Music into the United States. I benefitted from its well-rounded approach to pedagogy as a student myself and was therefore glad to share this with my students. I went a step further by participating in the rigorous process of examiner training. This increased my respect for the measures taken to uphold the standards and student-focussed philosophy at RCM. This organised, comprehensive system continues to energize my students by providing interesting, vetted repertoire and well-marked targets.
As a performer, I believe in cultivating projects that reach out to an audience. My own chamber music series, called Forum for Music (formerly, New York Poetry and Song), presents concerts on different themes. This summer, I was back in NYC to visit my studio of students (whom I still teach online), and spent time collaborating with colleagues on future FfM projects. I went on from New York to London and Stockholm to perform concerts that were the product of similar, earlier consultations. Performing at the highest level possible is necessary to my work as a teacher; when I am facing creative challenges, I can help others with the same.
I love teaching children and adults. As I strive for their musical growth, I engage the whole person: how they think, their physical capacity, their personalities. My students respond in-kind with a directness and enthusiasm that translates into progress and a stronger sense of self. It is invigorating.
