Lap Hang Cheng began his music education at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where he was a student of Dr. Felix Ungar. While in Hong Kong, Mr. Cheng was invited to play as the assistant viola principal in the “Orchestra of the Future”, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel(Music and Artist Director of LA Phil), and performed at the Nobel Price Ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden.
After completing his Master of Music degree at New England Conservatory in May 2021, where he was a student of Nicholas Cords(former Co-Artistic Director of Silkroad and violist of Brooklyn Rider), Mr. Cheng then continued his studies at Cleveland Institute of Music, with Robert Vernon(principal viola of The Cleveland Orchestra 1973-2016), Wesley Collins(Current principal violist of The Cleveland Orchestra) and Stanley Konopka(Current assistant principal violist of The Cleveland Orchestra). While in Cleveland, Mr. Cheng started playing as a substitute musician with the Cleveland Orchestra and played in the Canton Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Cheng currently serves as the Principal violist of the Oakville Symphony Orchestra and substitute violist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
His summer activities have included the Bowdoin International Music Festival and Ueno Gakuen Masterclasses with Nobuko Imai.
