Joanne Au

With 25+ years of experience in teaching youngsters from beginners to ARCT, Joanne develops her students to bring out their musicality to their best ability. Many of her students consistently score above the RCM National Averages in both RCM piano examinations and theory examinations. One of Joanne’s major teaching goals is to help young piano players perform their music beautifully. Music pieces are handpicked by Joanne based on her students' personalities, strengths, and developmental needs. Students are often encouraged to actively participate in piano parties, the yearly studio recital, and compete in city-wide music festivals such as the North York Music Festival, the Kiwanis Music Festival, and the Markham Music Festival. In recent years, Christmas concerts are held at local hospitals and retirement homes to enrich not only the students’ performing experiences but, more importantly, their roles in giving back to society. Equipped with a Master’s Degree in Piano Performance from the University of British Columbia under the tutelage of Robert Silverman, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance from Western University under Patricia Giron, she is also an RCM Certified Teacher, RCM Advanced Specialist in Piano, and RCM Intermediate Specialist in Theory. Besides teaching classical pieces, she’s also exceptionally experienced in teaching improvisation and playing from chords. She loves performing and playing in ensembles and is actively involved in music-making. Her students' achievements include a recipient of the Gold Medal for the RCM Grade 5 examination.
