Canadian flutist Emily Phernambucq is currently based in Calgary, where she maintains an
active career as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral performer. In February 2019, she
made her solo debut at Koerner Hall with the Royal Conservatory Orchestra under the direction
of Johannes Debus, performing Mozart’s Flute Concerto in G Major.
Appointed as Second Flute of the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra in 2023, Phernambucq
regularly collaborates with numerous ensembles, including the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra,
Regina Symphony Orchestra, Victoria Symphony Orchestra, and Calgary Civic Symphony. She
also served as Acting Assistant Principal Flute for the Calgary Philharmonic during the
2022/2023 season and has performed in prestigious venues across Canada such as the Jack
Singer Concert Hall, Koerner Hall, the Winspear Centre, and the National Arts Centre.
An advocate for contemporary music, Phernambucq performs with Ammolite Opera, a company
dedicated to celebrating new works and supporting Western Canadian artists. She is a three-time
participant at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, having performed in the Masterclasses for
Strings and Winds and the Opera in the 21st Century program, where she appeared in
productions of Chamberwerx, Orphee+, and Candide with Against the Grain Theatre. In 2017,
she toured across Canada with the National Youth Orchestra’s Edges of Canada tour.
As an educator, Phernambucq is on the faculty at the Conservatory at Mount Royal University
and has presented numerous recitals and masterclasses across Canada. She also works
extensively with young musicians, leading band clinics throughout Calgary and Southern
Alberta.
A native of Calgary, Phernambucq holds a Bachelor of Music and an Artist Diploma from The
Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music, and a Master of Music from McGill
University. Her primary teachers have included Denis Bluteau, Carolyn Christie, Nora Shulman,
Susan Hoeppner, and Lauren Eselson.
