Dan McCurry is a Piano and Music Composition teacher based in Charleston, SC. He started teaching piano independently shortly before graduating from College of Charleston where he studied music composition under Dr. David Maves and Dr. Edward Hart and jazz piano under the late Tommy Gill. Additionally, he is a piano faculty member at the private school Ashley Hall. He is an active member of the Charleston Music Teachers Association and Charleston Music Club where he currently serves as President for both organizations. He is also an active member of South Carolina Music Teachers Association where he serves as the recently created Creativity In Music Chair. In this role he has helped the organization launch a statewide composition and songwriting competition and recital, as well as a creativity workshops which featuring composers Wynn-Anne Rossi and Mike Springer as well as songwriter Michael Flynn (of Slow Runner). He is an advocate for exploring composition with pre-college students and has presented on this to Texas MTA, South Carolina MTA, and Charleston MTA.
Dan first introduced teaching music composition to his students in 2019 and has since helped his students compose over 100 pieces. His students have received local, statewide, regional, and national recognition for their compositions in the MTNA Composition Competition, NFMC Junior Composers Contest, NFMC Lynn Freeman Olson Composition Awards, Piano Guild Composition Contest, Piano Inspires Kids Magazine, Piano Explorer Magazine, South Carolina MTA Composition Competition, and the Charleston Sonatina Festival. His students have been accepted into music composition summer camps such as Brevard, Interlochen, and UNCSA with merit scholarships as well as music composition programs at Peabody, Winthrop, USC, and College of Charleston with music scholarships.
