Anna Boyes is a doctoral candidate in Vocal Pedagogy at the University of Toronto, where she studies under the supervision of Lorna MacDonald. Her research focuses on creating a pedagogical guide for selected vocal works by Reena Esmail, Kamala Sankaram, and Naresh Sohal. Anna will present her research as a national finalist in the 2025 Canadian Federation of Music Teachers' Association student competition in Montreal.
She is a recipient of several prestigious awards, including the London Music Scholarship Foundation, a National Finalist in the Canadian Music Competition, and the 2024-25 Brenda Berge Vocal Excellence Award from the University of Toronto. Additionally, she has received the Mariana Paunova and Stefano Algieri Scholarship in Voice twice, and the Gaelyne Gabora Memorial Prize from McGill University.
Some of Anna's favourite oratorio works that she has performed have been Haydn’s Creation, Handel’s Messiah, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Mass in C and Lieschen in Bach’s Coffee Cantata. Anna has also enjoyed performing opera and operetta roles with organizations such as the Toronto Operetta Theatre, UWOpera, Summer Opera Lyric Theatre, and Accademia Europea dell’Opera in Italy.
Anna has participated in several training programs, including Stratford Summer Music’s Vocal Academy, Against the Grain’s Summer Modern Opera Intensive, Brott Opera, and was an Emerging Artist with Arcady. She holds a Master of Music in Voice Performance and Literature from Western University, as well as a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from McGill University.
With a strong passion for teaching, Anna works with students of all ages. At the University of Toronto, she has been the vocal coach for the Soprano-Alto Chorus, under the direction of Dr. Elaine Choi, for three years. She also mentors Undergraduate Vocal Pedagogy students and is a voice instructor for the music minor engineering program. Additionally, she enjoys adjudicating music festivals. In her home studio, Anna prepares her students for auditions -such as those for institutional music programs, summer music programs, and musical theatre/opera roles -as well as recitals, Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) examinations, and various performances and festivals/competitions.
