Founded in 1942, the State Choir LATVIJA marks its 77th season in 2019. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Māris Sirmais since 1997, it is recognized as one of the world's truly great choirs, renowned for its nuanced a cappella performances, as well as guest appearances with Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, and the Berlin, London and St. Petersburg Philharmonic orchestras, among many others. The choir has performed with legendary conductors Zubin Mehta, Mariss Jansons, Andris Nelsons and Vladimir Ashkenazy.
In 1998, the State Choir LATVIJA established an annual international festival devoted to the performance of sacred music featuring new works by Arvo Pärt, Giya Kancheli, John Tavener, Ēriks Ešenvalds, John Rutter and Canadian George Juris Kenins, among many others.
This program will include works by Canadian and Baltic composers in celebration of Latvia’s centennial.
The State Choir LATVIJA’s concert on July 5 at Koerner Hall will mark its official Canadian debut.
