Course Description

This Summer Intensive theory class is available online only via Zoom. Visit Level 9 Harmony (In person) for classes at the Oscar Peterson School of Music's downtown Toronto location.

NOTE: Tuition does not include textbooks or exam. Students are responsible for purchasing their own textbooks and registering for exams. Summer Intensive theory registration opens in early spring. 

This Advanced Level course corresponds to the content of a first-year college or university music program, and is designed to prepare students to write the Level 9 Harmony Examination. Students should be at least 14 years old as of the start of the course. It is recommended that students complete RCM Level 8 Theory before registering for this course. The completion of homework assignments is required. Please see Course Outline below for more details.

Tuition includes:
  • Three classes per week starting the first week of July and ending in August the day before Canada's August Examination Session
  • Live online classes delivered in real time by OPSM faculty who are also RCM Examiners
  • Moodle Account to access instructor handouts and upload assignments

COURSE OUTLINE

Level 9 Harmony

  • fundamentals of harmonic language
  • introduction of two- and four- part writing
  • writing in four parts in the style of J.S. Bach's chorales
  • melody writing and melodic decoration
  • harmonic and structural analysis (including 18th century dances and inventions)

*Summer Intensive Courses are offered July/August and open for registration in early Spring. Students enrolling in the Summer Intensive course must be at least 14 years old. The volume and complexity of this course is not appropriate for younger learners.
