  • Instructor:  Cecilia Chan, Ann Edwards

Course Description

Learn to play piano in a group class setting.

NOTE: A parent or caregiver must attend each class with their child to help support their in-class and at-home learning.

Learn to Play - Level 1

By the end of this course, budding pianists will be playing simple pieces in C major! Through take-home studies and in-class instruction, Level 1 teaches children foundational musical concepts including time values, tone colours, rhythmic precision, notation, and dynamics, while encouraging the development of proper finger, arm, and body positions.

Prerequisites: Students will be required to have access to an 88-key piano for practice and to purchase course materials. More information about materials be provided in the first class. A consistent adult must accompany students to each class.

Learn to Play - Level 2

Learn to Play - Level 2 requires students to have a basic knowledge of notation, counting, treble and bass clefs, some sight reading and some ability to play with both hands.

Building on the concepts explored in Level 1, Level 2 aims to enhance students' confidence and improve their technique. Students will play a variety of repertoire while working on different techniques including legato, staccatos, non legato, 2-3 note slurs, 2-4 bars phrasing and pedaling, scales and basic theory. The virtues of practice, discipline, posture, and technique are conveyed in a fun, upbeat environment.

Each student will perform a piece for the group at the conclusion of each week's lesson. Repertoire is drawn from a variety of styles, from highly lyrical works to rhythmic pieces. Homework is assigned each week, with parents tracking their child's progress.

Prerequisites: Piano: Learn to Play Level 1, or permission of the instructor. Students will be required to have access to an 88-key piano for practice and to purchase course materials. More information about materials be provided in the first class. A consistent adult must accompany students to each class.

Learn to Play - Level 3

Level 3 studies deepen the link between theory and practice by further developing students' awareness of expression, contrast, and tone. Particular attention is paid to basic musicianship and body awareness, including techniques for expressing tone through use of arm weight. The teacher will lead the class through drills and repertoire from a piano at the front of the room while the students, wearing headsets, play along on individual keyboards. Individualized instruction and feedback are provided on an ongoing basis throughout the course.

Prerequisites: Piano: Learn to Play Level 2, or permission of the instructor. Students will be required to have access to an 88-key piano for practice and to purchase course materials. More information about materials be provided in the first class.

NOTE: A parent or caregiver must attend each class with their child. Full-year includes 28 weekly classes.
