Ian Feenstra
Ian Feenstra
Tuba player, educator, one time backup dancer: Ian Feenstra has had an incredibly varied career both at home and on tour. Inspired by his mother, and at the behest of his band teacher, Ian began playing the tuba at the age of 13. The love for the tuba came quickly and he quickly joined every ensemble that would have him.
After completing his undergraduate degree in tuba performance at the University of Toronto, he earned a Masters of Music from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. Ian also studied performance science at the Royal College of Music in London, UK, where he wrote a thesis on Low Latency video conferencing technology for education and performance.
He has performed extensively across Europe and North America, from wilderness folk festivals to symphony halls and opera pits. Ian freelances in Toronto, playing the tuba, sousaphone, cimbasso, euphonium, and trombone. He is active in orchestras, brass ensembles, and as a soloist. In addition, Ian is a dedicated chamber musician performing extensively with the Hogtown Brass and tours regularly on sousaphone with the New Orleans inspired band Turbo Street Funk.
Ian is a member of The Oscar Peterson School of Music faculty, teaching private tuba lessons. He also teaches tuba in the Oscar Peterson Program, founded in 2022.
Ian currently lives in Toronto with his wife and two young children who don’t just tolerate, but occasionally appreciate, his tuba tunes.
