Currently in his role as Department Chair Dr. Wheeler teaches a select handful of piano majors. He takes a few school-age students as time allows and also works with teachers who come to him for coaching.
Robin Harrison (a pupil of Harold Craxton, Carlo Zecchi, and Ilona Kabos) was Dale's undergraduate professor who introduced him to the great world of artist recordings and expanded his vision of the pianistic universe. Through his studies with Thomas Manshardt, a pupil Alfred Cortot, Dale was imbued with the Cortot heritage of refined piano tone. His doctoral professor Edward Gates (a pupil of Gyorgy Sebok) helped him to hone his critical listening and interpretive skills.
Dr. Wheeler has presented at local, national, and international conferences, including the European Piano Teachers' Association (Serbia), the CFMTA/MTNA collaborative conference (Toronto), and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference (Dallas), among others. His other workshop activities include presentations highlighting the publications of The Frederick Harris Music Co., Limited, and pedagogy workshops as part of the RCM Teacher Professional Development Seminars.
Dale has adjudicated music festivals and various competitions nationally from coast to coast. Active as a solo and collaborative pianist, during the past year he presented an all-Liszt recital program in several locations. For a number of years Dale was a regular columnist for Clavier magazine. He currently serve as Chair of Performing Arts at Red Deer
College, where his department includes Music, Theatre, and Motion Picture Arts. Dale Wheeler is Past President of the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra and is Vice President of the Alberta Piano Teachers' Association.
