Administered by the Chancellery of Honours at Rideau Hall, the King Charles III Coronation Medal has been awarded to Mervon Mehta, The Royal Conservatory’s Executive Director of Performing Arts. The honour was bestowed at a special ceremony in the Senate of Canada in Ottawa on April 3, 2025.

The King Charles III Coronation Medal recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the nation, their communities, or achieved exceptional accomplishments abroad that reflect positively on Canada. Mehta’s nomination was put forward by Senator Mohammad Al-Zaiback, a stalwart supporter of the arts in Canada, and Peter Donolo, Communications Director under Prime Minister Jean Chrétien.

Mervon Mehta has led an extraordinary career in the performing arts, both on stage and as an arts administrator. He joined The Royal Conservatory in 2009, overseeing the launch and artistic direction of Koerner Hall. He has since been the driving force behind the Conservatory’s acclaimed concert series at their Toronto headquarters, the TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning.

With performances that celebrate Canadian excellence and global artistry across genres—classical, jazz, world, pop, Indigenous, and contemporary music—The Royal Conservatory’s richly diverse concert season has become a staple of the Toronto cultural scene. Close to 1,400 concerts and events have taken place in Koerner Hall, featuring artists from 75 countries and dozens of First Nations. Under Mehta’s leadership, Koerner Hall has become one of the most respected and beloved concert venues in North America.

From the moment Koerner Hall opened its doors in 2009, Mervon has shaped it into one of the most respected and diverse performance venues in North America. This national honour is a fitting tribute to his remarkable vision, artistry, and unwavering dedication to enriching Canada’s cultural life.

He has curated 12 editions of the 21C Music Festival, a showcase of 21st-century composition featuring premieres, commissions, and co-commissions by Canadian and international composers.
It is a profound honour to receive this medal. I have been privileged to spend my career helping to bring artists and audiences together to create unforgettable experiences. Canada’s extraordinary cultural diversity and creative spirit have always inspired me—and it is a joy to share that on stage every season. Working alongside the team at the RCM, we have been able to introduce hundreds of emerging Canadian and international artists to audiences eager to hear new voices.
