The Royal Conservatory Orchestra opens its 2021-22 season on October 7, under the direction of Maestro Andrei Feher. The program includes Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, Towers’ Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 "Eroica". This concert will be available for livestreaming, as one of the Royal Conservatory’s online contributions to Culture Days 2021.

La Fiammata Piano Duo, Linda Ruan (BMus ‘19) and Charissa Vandikas (BMus ‘19), was the 2nd Prize winner at the prestigious ARD International Music Competition in Munich, Germany. ARD is the most prestigious international competition for duos, and includes categories for various instrumental duos, including piano duo. This year, in the category of Piano Duo, there were over 70 duos who applied to the competition.

Edward Burtynsky’s In the Wake of Progress, a choreographed blend of photographs and film including new and never-before-seen works, premieres at Luminato on October 16. This immersive digital experience tells the epic tale of humanity’s impact on the planet. This powerful production includes a soundtrack by composer and sound designer Philip Strong, featuring award-winning musical artist iskwē, and musicians of The Glenn Gould School including Leslie Ashworth (BMus ’19, violin), Ji Soo Choi (ADP ’21, violin), Michael Cox (ADP ’14, double bass), Daniel Dastoor (ADP ’22, violin), Ryan Davis (2019-20 Rebanks Fellow, viola), Ian Greenberg (ADP ’21, cello), Jessy Kim (PDP '16, 2020-21 Rebanks Fellow, violin), Byungchan Lee (2019-20 Rebanks Fellow, violin), Hezekiah Leung (ADP ’14 / 2020-21 Rebanks Fellow, viola), Isabella Perron (BMus ’24, violin) and Katya Poplyansky (ADP '18, 2018-19 Rebanks Fellow, violin).

Byeol Kim (ADP ‘16, piano) was the third prize winner at this summer’s Cleveland International Piano Competition, also winning the event’s “Armchair Jury Prize”. This competition, held completely online in 2020, explored an innovative hybrid model this year so that all 26 competitors could participate, even given changing travel restrictions.

The Royal Conservatory mourns the loss of R. Murray Schafer, eminent Canadian composer, and RCM alumnus. An artist with a wide range of interests, Mr. Schafer composed for theatre and created multimedia productions as well as choral pieces, but was best known for his groundbreaking creations – or “soundscapes” – that were performed outdoors and incorporated sounds from nature into the music. Mr. Schafer’s relationship with The Conservatory dates back over 75 years, including his time with The Glenn Gould School as its Composer-in-Residence.
